Katy McCormick, Destinies Made Manifest: Reading the Washington Mall, 2008-2012.
Exploring the seat of American power, Destinies Made Manifest: Reading the Washington Mall examines narratives reflecting the American project of democracy as unambiguous, exceptional, and eternal. Akin to a pilgrimage, walking from the Capitol building to the Lincoln Memorial reveals the processional nature of the Mall, whose separate yet connected monumental spaces emphasize the principles of freedom and liberty. My photographic exhibition is conceived as an immersive experience, meant to parallel a promenade on the Mall, and to incite reflection on American history.
I invite viewers to examine the meanings of these monuments and to ponder the contested nature of history and belonging. What is pictured here also raises the specter of what remains unsaid, but must be named.
